Located in Minhang District, Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station was put into operation on July 1, 2010. It is a highly modernized passenger railway station in China, as well as one of largest railway hub in Asia.
The station is the intersection of Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed railway and Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed railway and the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail intersection. It is sited in the west side of Shanghai, near the eastern Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport Terminal T2, being an important part of Shanghai Hongqiao integrated transport hub.
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station covers an total area of over 1.3 million square meters, of which construction area is about 230,000 square meters. Among it, the railway station house covers about 100,000 square meters and canopy area about 110,000 square meters. The northern part of the station connects Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, Beijing-Shanghai Railway and Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity; the southern connects Shanghai-Kunming railway, Shanghai-Hangzhou passenger line and Shanghai-Hangzhou intercity. It has a clear division of functions with the Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station. Shanghai Hongqiao Station fully open line CRH EMU trains, while the Shanghai station are mainly responsible for motor car, speed passenger trains, Shanghai South Railway Station primarily for speed passenger trains. There are 16 platforms and 30 lines, including 10 platforms and 19 lines for high-speed railway trains and 6 platforms and 11 lines for intercity normal speed trains.

Notes for taking trains in Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station
It stops checking tickets 5 minutes before the train departs. As Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is quite large, the ticket checking could take at least ten minutes, so passengers must allow sufficient time.
Automatic ticket machines only recognize ticket in that day. Passengers holding magnetic tickets can go in and out through automatic ticket machines. Passengers holding paper tickets should go in and out through men checking channels.
The traffic lights of automatic ticket machines use are installed in the middle upper side of the box. There are three colors after checking the ticket. The green indicator light indicates normal and you can go through it. The yellow light indicates that it is children ticket and other special ticket; there will be short bees from the buzzer. The red indicates breaking through, trailing or having been an outbound ticket record.
