Nyingchi Facts

Nyingchi Region is located in the southeast of Tibet, Nyingchi looks just like heaven on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Nyingchi is one of the important cradles of ancient Tibetan civilization. As early as four or five thousand years ago, ancestors of Tibetan began to live and work on this vast land.

"Nyingchi" means "the Grand Seat of the Sun" in the language of Tibetan. It is noted for its green mountains and clear water. The Himalaya and Tangula Mountains wind their ways from west to east like two colossal dragons and join the Henduan Mountains in the east. The city is in the embrace of these three mountain ranges. Nyingchi is also called "the Switzerland of Tibet" and "the Jiangnan of Tibet" (Jiangnan means the fertile and prosperous area in the south of the Yangtze.)

Nyingchi Prefecture, previously Tibetan Kongpo area, this land is situated in the lower reach of the Yarlung Tsangbo River. A considerable allotment of lakes, glaciers and waterfalls makes the region chock full of breathtaking natural wonders.

Geography: The prefecture contains the Namjagbarwa Peak, and the Yarlung Zangbo Great Canyon, located in Medog County, which attracts significant tourism and geoscientific and biological study to the area.

Population: Nyingchi has a population of 159,200, which includes many ethnic groups and Tibetan is its main body.

Administrative Division: The two counties of Zayü and Mêdog are considered by the Chinese government to be Tibetan territory and thus under Chinese jurisdiction, however they are de facto under control by India and make up large swathes of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Climate: This climate in Nyingchi is uniquely mild and wet at an altitude of 3,000 meters, bordering India and Burma to the south and Yunnan Province to the east.
