Zhujiajiao Ancient Town(朱家角古镇) is also named Zhujiajiao Water Town, reputed as a famous historic and cultural town with a history of over 1,700 years. Like other water towns in Jiangnan, in Zhujiajiao Water Town, old buildings stand along rivers, which link the town together. There are bridges over the rivers to help people transport from here to there. Wooden boat is the only transportation tool in ancient, but now it is used to have a joyful sightseeing on river. Leisure and tranquility are what it gives to tourists and visitors.
Zhujiajiao Ancient Town has two entrances in the east and north sides, and it has many attractions, like Great Qing Post Office, City God Temple, Kezhi Garden, Shanghai Art Gallery, Jiangnan No. 1 Tea House, and Shanghai Handicraft Zhujiajiao Exhibition Hall. In this ancient town, tourists could walk along streets, have a boat tour, have a cup of tea in tea house, enjoy local food and snacks and see some art works.
Tour time: set off at 08:00, get Zhujiajiao Ancient Town at about 09:30. Then have a day tour, and enjoy food and snacks in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. Come back to Shanghai downtown at 16:00, and you will get the downtown at about 17:30. Next you may go to People's Square and Nanjing Road to enjoy Shanghai night life.
Zhujiajiao Water Town openinghours: Zhujiajiao Ancient Town opens all day, but attractions inside the town open from 08:30 to 16:30.
Zhujiajiao Water Town ticket: Zhujiajiao Ancient Town doesn’t have entrance ticket, but attractions inside the town is charged with entrance ticket. A through ticket of 8 attractions is 60 yuan, and a through ticket of 4 attractions is 40 yuan; a through ticket of 8 attractions including boat sightseeing is 80 yuan.
Sightseeing ways: boat sightseeing +walk
It is located in Qingpu district, in the west of Shanghai, close to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Kunshan in Jiangsu province and Jiaxing in Zhejiang. Tourists could get to this ancient water town by subway or bus, or something else.
From Shanghai to Zhujiajiao Water Town
Subway: take subway Line 17 at Hongqiao Railway Station, and get off at Zhujiajiao station( you could take subway Line 2 or Line 10 to Hongqiao Railway Station). Subway Line 17 from Hongqiao Railway Station to Zhujiajiao starts at 06:00 and ends at 22:30, and from Zhujiajiao to Hongqiao Railway Station, it starts at 06:00 and ends at 22:00.
Express bus: take express bus(Shanghai-Zhujiajiao) at Pu’an road Yan’an east road(普安路延安东路) bus stop, and get off at Zhujiajiao Bus Station, which takes about 1 hour and costs about 12 yuan. This express bus from Shanghai to Zhujiajiao starts at 06:30, then every half hour, and ends at 22:00. From Zhujiajiao to Shanghai downtown, the bus starts at 06:00, then every half hour, and ends at 21:00.

As Zhujiajiao Water town map shows, Zhujiajiao Ancient Town has two entrances, one is in the east side, and another is in the north side. If you go in from the east entrance, you could travel from the east side, then through Fangsheng Bridge, go the north entrance. Second, you have a tour in Kezhi Garden and Shanghai Art Gallery, then take a boat sightseeing from the north to southwest, next have a tour in areas of City God Temple, and Yuanjin Buddhist Temple. Third through Yongfeng Bridge, go to XIeliang Pavillion, then go out from the exit.
If you go in from the north entrance, you could first have a tour in the northwest, go to Kezhi Garden and Shanghai Art Gallery, then have a boat sightseeing, next, go to the southeast part. Second, have a tour in the southeast part, you could have a cup of tea in the tea house, and go to the exhibition hall and museum. Third, move to the southwest part though a bridge, then have a tour in areas of City God Temple, and Yuanjin Buddhist Temple, last go through Yongfeng Bridge to Xieliang Pavillion, then go out from the exit.
After a tour in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, you come back to the downtown. Given that it is around 17:30, I recommend Nanjing Road and People’s Square to you to have a night tour and enjoy Shanghai Night life. If you take subway Line 17, then you transfer to Line 2 at Hongqiao Railway Station, and get off at People’s Square station or Nanjing east road station. If you take Shanghai-Zhujiajiao express bus back to downtown, then you get off at Pu’an road Yan’an east road(普安路延安东路) bus stop, which is close to People’s Square, and only about 750 meters away. You only need to walk about 10 minutes. From People’s Square to Nanjing Road, it is only 300 meters. Nanjing Road is a pedestrian street and a popular business street, full of restaurants and stores. In Nanjing Road, tourists could enjoy Shanghai cuisine, go shopping, have cups of drinks or something else.
