The whole hill looks exactly like a huge elephant stretching its trunk drinking water of the Li River, hence the name.
It is the masterpiece of karst landscape, composed of pure limestone deposited on seabed 360million years ago. Between the "trunk" and the "body" is a vast round cave which resembles a full moon on water hence the name Moon-over-Water Cave. The famous Guilin municipal Two Rivers and Four Lakes system is a project integrating all the highlights of Guilin scenery. Formed by two river (Li River and Peach Blossom River) and four lakes including Fir Lake (Shahu), Banyan Lake (Ronghu), Guihu Lake (Osmanthus Lake) and the newly dug Wood Dragon Lake (Mulong Lake), this project is the largest one in scale in the history of Guilin. The project of water system reconstruction was launched in 1998 and completed in 2002, forming a round-the-city waterway that linking the four lakes Guihu Lake, Ronghu Lake, Shanhu Lake, Mulong Lake and the two rivers Li River, Taohua River (Peach Blossom River) together, which enables Guilin to be a scenic city of park.. Though located in downtown, the lake areas are beautiful and quiet city gardens.
Covered an area of 134 hectares, Seven Star Park is the biggest comprehensive park in Guilin with the best natural environment. Situated on the eastern side of the Li River, this park has many attractive tourist sites such as the Follower Bridge, Camel Hill, Seven Star Cave and others.
The elegantly constructed Flowers Bridge is the main gateway to the park. It was first built in the Song Dynasty and renovated in the Ming Dynasty. It's said that in the ancient time the bridge was well surrounded by wild flaming flowers in spring, thus the name of the bridge. Unfortunately, the number of flowers reduced greatly during the Qing Dynasty and now visitors can't find any.
The Seven Star Cave is one of the most popular toursit attractions in Seven Star Park. The earliest exploration of Seven-Star Cave dates back to the Tang Dynasty, some 1,300 years ago. It is a fantastic karst cave with a large number of stalagmites and stalactites, which decorate the cave into an eye-dazzling beautiful place.
The cave has a year-round temperature of about 20 Celsius. The maximum ceiling height inside is 27 meters, and the maximum width is 49 meters. A concrete and stone tour path of approximately 1,000 meters runs through the cave between its entrance and exit points.
