Beijing South Railway Station

Beijing South Railway Station is located at the joint of Dongcheng District and Fengtai District, within the South Second Ring of Beijing. It is the largest passenger station in China. As the departure station of Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail and Beijing-Tianjin suburban railway station, it connects Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway and Beijing Railway Station in the east, as well as Beijing-Shanghai passenger line, Beijing motor car section and Jingshan, Yongfeng railway in the west. Therefore, it is a large comprehensive transport hub that integrates high speed rail, commuter rail, urban rail transit and bus, taxi and other municipal transport facilities as a whole. As to the passenger flow volume, Beijing South Railway Station honors to the largest railway station in Asia, and the third in the world.

Structure of Beijing South Railway Station
The total area of Beijing South Railway Station is 499,200 square meters, of which construction area is 420,000 square meters. The main station building covers an area of 310,000 square meters, with two floors above the ground and one floor underground. From the top to the bottom, the five floors successively are elevated waiting hall with elevated circular driveway, platform track layers, transfer hall, Metro Line 4 station and Metro Line 14 station. The total length of sides of the awning of the ring viaduct is 2.8 km. It is the main channel for cars and taxi. Passengers can get direct access to elevated waiting hall.

There are 13 platforms, 24 arrival-departure tracks and 3 passenger depots in the station. Ticketing office is in the elevated waiting hall, with a total of 84 ticket windows and 39 ticket vending machines. Railway station entrance is controlled by the automatic ticket system.

History of Beijing South Railway Station
In 1896 the Qing government started the construction of Luhan (Marco Polo Bridge to Hankou) railway. In 1897, the railway extended from the Fengtai to Majiabao. In 1897, Majiabao station was built. Historical scholars believe that the former Majiabao Station referred to Beijing South Railway Station, which could be the oldest railway station in Beijing. In May 1902, Majiabao Station was renamed as Yongding Gate Station. The next 50 years time, Yongding Gate station had served as the departure station to Shanghai and Guangzhou.

In 1932, the waiting room and ticket office in the station were renovated. In 1988, Yongding Gate Station was officially renamed as Beijing South Railway Station. Since January 28, 2006, the station was renovated in a large scale. On August 1, 2008, the station was officially re-opened. The expected service life period is 100 years.

Taxi: There are taxi services on the elevated circular driveway. To get a taxi is actually not convenient in the city's railway stops. Occasionally you might have to wait for 1 or 2 hours. So it is better for you to take buses or subways to the places where you want to go.
